A child of God!!!
TNS #4 “Not Invited”
Tonights session is “Not Invited”
We talked Sunday about David who wasn’t invited to this sacrifice/this celebration where Samuel was coming to anoint a new King.
How many of you can relate, maybe a wedding, or a family gathering, or a social event where others you know are posting all about it...
How many have ever been there, where you were not invited???
How did that make you feel???
Story: I remember being in school and not being invited to the party, at first I was kinda bothered by it, but after awhile I began to realize they didn’t invite me, because of who I was.
I wouldn’t do the things they were doing, and so there was no point in inviting me.
So after awhile I began to wear that as a badge of honor instead of feeling sorry or sad I wasn’t invited.
What you see, is what you get… We often times, grow up hearing words or felt less than at times around others who have made us feel a particular way.
Maybe we’ve felt like we were never good enough… or heard words like...
I wish you were more like so and so.
Why can’t you do anything right.
I wish you were never born.
Some of us carry with us the sting of rejection.
And so we have allowed what others think about us or have said about us, to dictate who we are.
So I tell you what YOU see!!! Is what YOU get!!!
Can anybody share a time, or maybe you have been through it multiple times, or maybe even still going through times where you have felt rejected or not enough???
We have all been in a place where we have felt rejected or not enough.
But my hope is that through this series we will get you pass that state of rejection, and into a state of acceptance.
Some of us carry that rejection with us and it has eaten us alive over the years.
We feel less than, we feel abandoned, and most of all we feel unloved.
Isaiah 43:18 ESV
“Remember not the former things, nor consider the things of old.
Stop allowing your past to determine your future.
Most of the time we give others, what has been given to us...
If we were treated bad than thats typically what we give to others.
If we were rejected, than it’s easier for us to reject others.
But through this series, I want us to break that cycle.
I want us to empty ourselves out and get rid of all those feelings of rejection and Abandonment.
All those negative things that were said about you or those moments where you felt useless, I want us to grab those memories and place them at the feet of God, and no longer hold unto them.
1 Samuel 16:1 ESV
The Lord said to Samuel, “How long will you grieve over Saul, since I have rejected him from being king over Israel? Fill your horn with oil, and go. I will send you to Jesse the Bethlehemite, for I have provided for myself a king among his sons.”
And so Samuel although he was a bit nervous, followed the Lords instructions and went to anoint one of Jesse’s sons.
1 Samuel 16:6 ESV
When they came, he looked on Eliab and thought, “Surely the Lord’s anointed is before him.”
1 Samuel 16:7 ESV
But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.”
1 Samuel 16:8 ESV
Then Jesse called Abinadab and made him pass before Samuel. And he said, “Neither has the Lord chosen this one.”
1 Samuel 16:9 ESV
Then Jesse made Shammah pass by. And he said, “Neither has the Lord chosen this one.”
1 Samuel 16:10 ESV
And Jesse made seven of his sons pass before Samuel. And Samuel said to Jesse, “The Lord has not chosen these.”
Now you talk about feeling rejected… David doesn’t even get invited to the party.
Some of us know what that feels like, your not even worthy to make the guest list.
And maybe you can deal with it, if it’s people you don’t know that well, but it hurts when its your own family.
David is out tending the sheep, while the rest of the family is having a BBQ trying to figure out who might become the next King.
His father didn’t even say bring David in, he just might have a shot at this thing.
1 Samuel 16:11 ESV
Then Samuel said to Jesse, “Are all your sons here?” And he said, “There remains yet the youngest, but behold, he is keeping the sheep.” And Samuel said to Jesse, “Send and get him, for we will not sit down till he comes here.”
His father even tried to stop Samuel from bringing him...
But behold he’s just a sheepherder
But behold he’s just a little runt.
But behold he’s not good enough.
But behold he’s a mistake.
I don’t know what you were told, but you can no longer allow those words or those thoughts to dictate who you are.
1 Samuel 16:12 ESV
And he sent and brought him in. Now he was ruddy and had beautiful eyes and was handsome. And the Lord said, “Arise, anoint him, for this is he.”
Now I can imagine how David felt...
Because there was a celebration going on, and everyone was in their Sunday Best, probably smelling all good.
And then here David comes, Stinking and smelling, with his dirty work clothes on.
Trying to figure out what was going on.
Then to be let in, on the fact that Samuel had come to anoint one of Jesse’s sons to be the next King.
I could imagine him thinking wait a minute, why was I not dressed then, why was I not invited.
The hurt, the disappointment, the rejection, must have been hard to accept.
And I know some of you carry these very things with you on a daily basis.
But regardless of what others think or have said about you. I need you to know that those are lies from the devil, because if God created you it was with a purpose.
1 Samuel 16:13 ESV
Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the midst of his brothers. And the Spirit of the Lord rushed upon David from that day forward. And Samuel rose up and went to Ramah.
What You see, is what you get!!!
If you choose to see what others have said about you, than thats what you will get.
But if you choose to see who God created you to be, than that is what you will get.
David may have felt rejected, but God showed Him he was accepted.
